Intelligence at the edge of the map.
The wildest places on earth have always been frontiers. The next one is built from power, steel and silicon.
Every age has its frontier.
Granite ridgelines above the Owens Valley. The Seven Summits. Walls of water at Nazaré and Mavericks. The roadless country of the Gates of the Arctic. Places that are raw, immense, and indifferent to anyone unprepared for them.
The data center is the frontier of our time. A landscape of power and compute, where a new kind of intelligence is taking shape.
We read that terrain the way a climber reads a ridge: closely, honestly, and with respect for its scale.
The terrain, measured.
Where the world computes, how it connects, and what powers it. Drawn from open public datasets, aggregated for the page, and credited beneath every map.

Leading countries
Source: © OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL. Data as of 30 Oct 2026. 5,031 features tagged telecom=data_center or building=data_center (nodes, ways and relations, by centroid); features within 200 m are merged into one site, giving 3,672 sites. Countries and regions are assigned from Natural Earth 1:50m boundaries (70 offshore or unmatched sites are uncounted there). Coverage reflects mapping effort and is not a complete census of data centers. Basemap: Natural Earth 1:110m via world-atlas.
Submarine telecommunication cable mapped in OpenStreetMap, across 1,438 cable segments. Coverage is concentrated in European and North Atlantic waters; most trans-Pacific and many long-haul routes are not yet mapped in OpenStreetMap, so this is the mapped network, not the whole of it.
Source: © OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL. Data as of 30 Oct 2026. Ways tagged communication=line or telecom=line, or seamark:type=cable_submarine with a telecom category, that are marked submarine or underwater; power cables excluded. Lengths are summed from the full-resolution geometry; routes are simplified for display.
Installed capacity across 34,936 power plants, by primary fuel.
Capacity by fuel · GW
Source: World Resources Institute, Global Power Plant Database v1.3.0 (June 2021; capacity figures mostly report years 2017–2019), CC BY 4.0. Waste is grouped with biomass, petcoke with oil; cogeneration, wave & tidal and other in “Other”. Plants are summed per fuel on a 3 px grid; dot area is proportional to capacity.
Nameplate capacity of 28,484 operating generators at 14,797 plants, by energy source.

Storage includes batteries and pumped-storage hydro. Generators are summed per fuel on a 3 px grid; dot area is proportional to capacity. Boundaries: U.S. Census Bureau via us-atlas.
Announced capacity across 58 publicly reported US neocloud and AI GPU sites. About 1.1 GW is reported operating today.

Figures are approximate and come from public announcements; they mix IT (critical) load and total facility or utility power, so totals are indicative only. Sites are shown at city or county level only; one site located only to a state is counted in totals but not mapped. “Operating” excludes partly operating capacity that was not broken out.
Named for the wild places.
Every frontier we admire lends its name to a part of what we are building. A vocabulary, not a map.

Three forces shape the new terrain.
Power
Energy is the first constraint. Every frontier begins at the substation.
Compute
Silicon at scale: cooled, connected and run without compromise.
Intelligence
Where power and compute converge, new minds take shape.
